Essential Thai for Tourists

You do not need to be fluent in Thai to have a dramatically better experience in Thailand. A handful of well-chosen phrases — spoken with a smile and the right polite particle — will earn you genuine warmth, better prices, and access to places and experiences that stay hidden from tourists who rely solely on English.

This guide is organized by situation. Jump to whatever you need, or read through to build a solid foundation before your trip. Every phrase includes Thai script, romanization, and English meaning.

Remember: Add ครับ (kráp) if you are male or ค่ะ (kâ) if you are female to the end of sentences for politeness. This is not optional — dropping the particle sounds abrupt and rude.

Greetings and Basic Politeness

These phrases will be used dozens of times every day.

The phrase ไม่เป็นไร (mâi bpen rai) is one of the most important expressions in Thai culture. It conveys "no worries," "never mind," "it's all good." Use it often — it perfectly captures the Thai attitude toward life's small inconveniences.

A typical market bargaining exchange:

You: อันนี้เท่าไหร่คะ (an níi tâo rài ká) — "How much is this?"

Vendor: สามร้อยบาท (sǎam rói bàat) — "300 baht"

You: แพงไปค่ะ ลดได้ไหม (paeng bpai kâ, lót dâai mǎi) — "Too expensive. Can you lower it?"

Vendor: สองร้อยห้าสิบ (sǎwng rói hâa sìp) — "250"

You: สองร้อยได้ไหมคะ (sǎwng rói dâai mǎi ká) — "How about 200?"

Other Shopping Phrases

Tip: Bargaining is expected at markets, night bazaars, and with tuk-tuk drivers. It is not appropriate at shopping malls, convenience stores (7-Eleven), or restaurants.

Emergencies

Hopefully you will never need these, but it is important to know them.

Thailand's emergency number is 191 (police) and 1669 (medical emergency). The tourist police hotline is 1155 and has English-speaking operators.

Numbers are essential for prices, times, addresses, and phone numbers.

To form compound numbers, simply combine them:

• 25 = ยี่สิบห้า (yîi sìp hâa)
• 150 = หนึ่งร้อยห้าสิบ (nùng rói hâa sìp) or ร้อยห้าสิบ
• 2,500 = สองพันห้าร้อย (sǎwng pan hâa rói)

Note: The number 1 when used at the end of a compound number changes pronunciation from หนึ่ง to เอ็ด (èt). So 11 is สิบเอ็ด (sìp èt), not สิบหนึ่ง. And 20 uses the special form ยี่สิบ (yîi sìp) rather than สองสิบ.

Thank You and Sorry

These deserve special emphasis because they are used constantly.

ขอบคุณ (kàwp kun) — Thank you. Use it generously. Thai culture values gratitude and acknowledging others. Thank the taxi driver, the street food vendor, the hotel staff, the person who gives you directions. Always with ครับ/ค่ะ.

ขอโทษ (kǎw tôot) — This word covers both "sorry" and "excuse me." Use it to:

• Get someone's attention
• Ask to pass through a crowd
• Preface a request or question
